Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome back to another great year of teaching and learning! Listed below are some of the new district initiatives that promise to create another exciting and successful year for your child.

The district has strengthened its STEM program at the elementary level by increasing the frequency of the program to once a week for all students in grades two through five. The STEM program will now include an artistic component to further develop our students’ ingenuity and creativity. The program will now be called STEAM. Our amazing PTO has been extremely generous and thanks to their donations of technological devices, we have been able to increase the number of robots and kits students will have in the classroom. Students in grades six through eight will also have this course as one of their cycle classes with stimulating new projects in a new STEAM lab.

In late September, we will implement a new one to one Chromebook initiative for all students in grades five through eight. Last year, fifth-grade students, parents, and teachers provided meaningful feedback which will assist us in effectively launching this initiative. Students and teachers will now be able to use their Chromebooks during instruction and to complete homework assignments and projects. The new Chromebooks will allow for greater and quicker teacher feedback to students through G-Suite for Education. Teachers will receive additional professional development in technology, literacy, and mathematics through hands-on and engaging training. The district will continue to forge stronger partnerships with Watchung Hills Regional High School and our neighboring districts to share ideas, resources, and to participate in significant teacher trainings. Additionally, teachers will be engaged in collaborative Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) during monthly meetings to share lessons, assessments and best practices across all grade levels.

Parent informational nights were successful last year and will be offered once again on various topics throughout the year to share strategies to assist all of our students and families. The district’s new website, which now offers a Smartphone app, will also be used as another tool to strengthen the home and school connection. The new website will be easier to navigate and the app is customized to assist parents in having information readily available on their Smartphones. More information will be sent to our families later this month on all of the new features of the website and how to access the district’s app.

The teachers and administrators have been working diligently to ensure a warm welcome for our students and families. I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities to visit your child’s classroom and to partner with your child’s teacher. This will create a stronger home and school connection and an opportunity to participate in meaningful dialogue throughout the year. I look forward to another successful school year and thank you for your continued support of our school district.

My very best wishes for a fantastic school year!
